Space heater causes fire

I live in an old home; its over 50 years old but I have lived here for only seven years now but I assume it is time to make some changes.

I have been thinking about making some changes for a while now: after last week I guess it is time. I don’t currently have a gas furnace in our old house. I just rely on area heater to keep the old house warm. I don’t have to turn on the area heater often, so I didn’t really assume it was an important deal to upgrade the gas furnace anytime soon. However, I woke up in the middle of the night because it was extra chilly and cold in our old house. I knew that a cold front was supposed to come through but I didn’t expect it to get this cold in the old house. I went to plug in our area heater so I could moderate up the room. However, right when I connected the area heater the plug started to spark in addition to catching on fire. I knew that area heater were really dangerous, but I had no belief that the plug could spark then start a fire. I was able to get the fire under control pretty fast, but I called an HVAC company first thing the next day so I didn’t have to worry about a fire starting again, or freezing to death. I am happy that I called the HVAC company so that I didn’t have to stress anymore. The HVAC tech provided a really great price for upgrading our HVAC system too.
